Issue with WordPress “Update Now” button.

September 24, 2015 | In: APF, Centos, Cpanel, Create me Site., Installation, Linux, PHP

Just want to quote on the update process of recent WordPress release 4.3.1.

I took the backup of database and tried the “update now” button from Dashboard. It was hanging forever,

Sometimes it showed Downloading.. from http://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-4.3.1-no-content.zip but never proceeded to the next process.

I had a firewall in my server. By default, the internet access from inside of the server to the world was restricted. Only the required connections were whitelisted. But then, i already had the entry “download.wordpress.com” whitelisted to connect to the “http” Port 80 of the WordPress server.

Logged into my server using SSH. I just tried a telnet to the WordPress server and it worked fine.

[root@myserver src]# telnet downloads.wordpress.org 80
Trying 66.155.40.188…
Connected to downloads.wordpress.org (66.155.40.188).
Escape character is ‘^]’.
^]
telnet> q
Connection closed.

Confused !

Still the “update now” is stuck at Downloading. Now I checked the link at the dashboard, exactly from where it was downloading after clicking the “update now” button.  The link was “http://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-4.3.1-no-content.zip”.

Now again from my server I tried to download the file using wget.

[root@myserver src]# wget http://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-4.3.1-no-content.zip

Saving to: `wordpress-4.3.1-no-content.zip’

The wget now showed the HTTP response as “301 Moved Permanently”. It redirects automatically to https port 443. So now the link is “https://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-4.3.1-no-content.zip”. However, my firewall has only port 80 open to the wordpress link.

I just added 443 (https) port.

“Update Now” works like a charm!..

If you are into a shared hosting environment and don’t have SSH root access, you may need to check with the support team. Update them to make sure that the following link has port 80 and port 443 open from their server to outside world.

downloads.wordpress.org

Port 89,443
