Share a single Logical drive from SAN storage to multiple virtual machines in ESXi

December 17, 2015 | In: Apache

Recently for implementing a GFS cluster file system on four nodes, the staging process was done under virtual machines housed in Vmware ESXi 6. For implementing the shared file system, where all the four nodes can read and write simultaneously the same shared storage should be available to all the four nodes. However, this was not being allowed by Esxi without proper configuration.

Here is my configuration. I have Hitachi storage zoned and already connected to the Esxi server(zoning is with Esxi server only. My HBA card doesn’t support NPIV, so no virtual WWN for the guest machine). The disk is visible in the ESXi server. To add this device in all the four servers, perform the following.

Virtual Machine(right click) > Edit properties

Under Hardware > Click Add > Select Hard drive

Select “Raw Device Mapping”. This would be grayed out, if no free storage drives are available from your storage box. Make the shared LUN/logical device from your storage box available to the ESXi server. When you select Raw Device mapping, the free storage available will be shown.

Now select the Virtual device node SCSI 0:0 bus in the next page. Now move to the SCSI controller Under “Edit Settings > Hardware”.  Select the “Physical” Option. To use this selection(Physical), all disks used by the Virtual machine should be “Thick”. If you have created virtual machine using “Thin” disk. Navigate to the disk file of that virtual machine from the datastore, Right click the disk file and select the option “Inflate” to convert the disk to thick. The virtual machine should be powered off.

Now for the virtual machine which you need the same storage to be accessed, go to the “Edit settings” of that virtual machine.

Under Hardware > Click Add > Select Hard drive

Here use the following Option instead of Raw device mapping.
